| Spiritual Freedom
Passover begins Saturday night and it traditionally is about
obtaining freedom from oppression. I would like to speak instead
about spiritual freedom. This is not to minimize the importance
of freedom from physical slavery. Being an American, I
appreciate freedom as the primary key value.
The first
step towards freedom would be physical. On the other hand, it
does not stop there. We need to have emotional and psychological
freedom. We need the freedom to express our uniqueness, our
needs, and our creativity. If someone is oppressing these
freedoms in you or you are oppressing these, this would be the
next stage of freedom. We also need intellectual freedomfreedom
to read what we want to, freedom to explore the logical and the
illogical. Furthermore, we need religious freedomthe
entitlement to pray and believe as we wish, the privilege to
express our religious beliefs. The right to explore other
beliefs and religions cannot be undermined. It is only through
explorations that we find our spiritual path.
It is not
our spiritual path; however, that I wish to discuss, it is
obtaining the freedom of our soul. Freedom of our soul is about
having a unique relationship with ourselves. It is about not
being slaves to our own distortions. The distortions of
mis-beliefs, such as the belief that you might not be as good as
another might. Another example is the mis-conception that you
are not a divine seed--the mistaken belief that you are not
enough. These negative beliefs, that I call the lower-self,
influence and can oppress us. It limits us from being an
expression of God, our higher-self.
Another area of
spiritual freedom is the freedom from having to have life
proceed in a certain way. We become tied to a model or comfort
level. This comfort level can enslave us to a limited lifestyle,
a limited financial level, and perhaps an unfulfilled life.
No
discussion of spiritual freedom can take place without talking
about our ego. It is the unhealed ego, I will discuss here. It
is unhealed in that it is in an internal state of pain-- Pain
from not being loved, cared for, abused, hurt, disrespected,
reproached, shamed, etc., etc. The unhealed ego will force us,
through our subconscious to live in terms of feeding it, giving
it what it wants, fulfilling it, and designing a life that
provides it with its relief from pain or perceived pain. This is
not divine. Even when the ego drives us to success, it may be in
a manner that does not allow the real expression of whom we
divinely are but in a reactive expression to its environment.
Finally, freedom means being free from having. This
means we need to be free from habits, addictions, attachments to
people, things, places, ways and ideas. Freedom means we are
free or our soul is free to listen to when God speaks. We are
free when we commune or connect to spirit. Freedom is ours, when
we choose to allow the Light, God, the Creator, our higher-self
to lead, and not our subconscious needs to manipulate us. We are
free when we can turn away from something and not feel lack, but
still feel full. We are free when our souls drink deeply of the
divine spirit and that never leaves us. Freedom means we have no
doubt that we are the same substance of God and one soul.
Finally, we are free when we know that the universe will
fulfill our divine path merely because we have dominion over our
soul and that soul is Divine. We then create a life that is
spiritually free and divinely formed. Blessings for Passover,
may you find your freedom.
